In early 2016 we were instructed to compile the Cyprus chapter of a report funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme on the regulation of crowdfunding and market developments for renewable energy sources. The CrowdFundRES initiative is a pan-European Union project funded by the EU that aims to stimulate investment in renewable energy. Recognising that access to financing is becoming more challenging for renewable energy project developers and that a significant section of the public has an interest in investing in renewable energy projects, however small the individual amounts, it seeks to bring them together via the intermediary of crowdfunding platforms, which facilitate the financial interaction.
