The results of the Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Contest of composition, umpired by the Cité de la Musique (CDM) of Paris, have been announced. The winner of the contest is Mr. Alberto Cola of Italy. Mr. Cola's composition entitled "Ruins of Palmyr", has been judged by the international jury to be of a very high quality.

In addition to cash prizes for the top three entries, Mr. Cola's winning composition will be performed live at a July 22, 2000 concert at the Felsenreitschule concert hall in Salzburg, Austria. AGIP sponsors the event which will be conducted by Mr. Hubert Soudant, who is head of the international jury which selected the winning pieces.

The contest was for a symphonic composition, approximately ten minutes long, for a full orchestra, without electronics, and inspired by the myth of Antar. Originally a slave born as an illegitimate son of the tribal chief, Antar was a great fighter for his tribe and a lover of his cousin Abla. When Abla was offered to be married to another, Antar stopped fighting for his tribe which was eventually beaten in battle. When his father was forced to recognize him as his son and grant him to marry his beloved Abla, Antar stood up to his obligation to fight for his tribe which emerged victorious. The theme of the concert is "Orientalism" and the composer was held to integrate elements of his choice and inspiration originating from Arab music.

The date of the AGIP concert immediately precedes the internationally renowned Salzburg Festival. The concert is organized in co-ordination with Mr. Gerard Mortier, the Salzburg Festival Director. The concert will be listed in the program as part of the pre-opening festivities of the Salzburg Festival. The concert will certainly help in promoting Arab culture in the heart of one of Europe's capitals of fine art. This private concert will be performed by the famed Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg and by Arab and non-Arab artists.

The sponsor of the event, Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), is the leading intellectual property firm in the Middle East and North Africa, with offices in every Arab country.
