The inventor of the plastic solar cell ð Serdar Saricitftci ð is hard at work at the University of Linz in association with Kees Humelen and Christoph Brabec on developing a marketable version of his discovery. Partners from Austria and around the world, including the U.S. and Japan, are interested in participating in its production because of the plastic cell's considerable advantages. First of all, not only the cell's raw material but the plastics technology behind it are less expensive than other processes. Second, in contrast to semiconductor-based technology, the new invention operates at the molecular level (similar to green plants) rather than the atomic level - allowing these photovoltaic elements to be optimally directed to sunlight.

The cooperation among the research collaborators and potential partners is yet another example of the value of Austria's research institutes as a business incubator.
