The first legislation on company names in Finland was the Company Name Decree of 1895. For over 80 years this remained the only law on company names but in 1979 it was finally replaced with the current Company Name Act (the "Act").

The Act defines a company name as a name used in someone's business to distinguish it from other businesses. Under the Act it is further stipulated that a part of a company's business may be carried out under a supplementary company name, to which the rules on ordinary company names are applied. Finally the Act gives a possibility to use a secondary mark, e.g. a slogan, for a part of its business.
