In 2012, the Pennsylvania legislature passed the Voter ID law. The stated purpose was to prevent voter fraud. Subsequent to the passage of the law there have been challenges which initially resulted in a preliminary injunction enjoining the implementation of the law. The voter ID law has been the subject of previous blog posts on 7/3/12, 9/25/12 and 10/3/12.

On January 17, 2014, the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court struck down provisions of Pennsylvania's voter ID law which required voters to present identification prior to voting. After a 2 week trial the Court issued a permanent injunction enjoining implementation of the voter ID requirements finding:

The right to vote is fundamental right;

The voter ID law does not further that right;

There still exists a threat to thousands of voters despite the government's attempts to educate voters on the law.
