The CFPB adopted amendments concerning the confidential treatment of information obtained or generated during the course of agency work. The final rulemaking - which revises CFPB rules in connection with the protection and disclosure of confidential information, as well as definitions and procedures - goes into effect on December 24, 2020.

The adopted amendments were proposed by the CFPB in 2016 (see  prior coverage). The portion of the 2016 proposal pertaining to procedures used by the public to obtain information from the CFPB under the Freedom of Information Act, the Privacy Act of 1974, and in legal proceedings, was adopted in a separate 2018 agency rulemaking.
