Deepfakes — hyper-realistic manipulated videos, audio, or images generated using artificial intelligence — have emerged as a double-edged sword. While offering potential uses in industries such as entertainment and education, they also enable increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes, presenting significant threats to trust, security, and reputation.

To protect their organizations, information security professionals need to understand how deepfakes work and what they can do to detect and defend against this new threat.

Over the past decade, technological advancements in areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and synthetic media like deepfakes have made it increasingly difficult to distinguish between genuine and fabricated content. Deepfakes leverage AI to create hyper-realistic fake images, audio, and video. The term "deepfake" merges "deep learning" and "fake," describing how AI systems use machine learning algorithms to stitch together audio and visual data. Deep learning, a subset of machine learning, uses Artificial Neural Networks (ANN)—algorithms inspired by the human brain— to process and learn from large datasets. These networks are capable of performing complex tasks, including predictive modeling and problem solving, by learning from experience and deriving insights from seemingly unrelated information.

The ability of deepfakes to replicate human voices, facial expressions, and gestures with alarming accuracy presents significant challenges for IT security professionals. The accessibility of open source deepfake tools and the proliferation of computing power have raised serious concerns about security, privacy and the integrity of digital content. As these technologies advance, it is critical for organizations to implement robust detection and defense mechanisms to safeguard against the escalating threat posed by deepfakes and other AI-driven attacks.

How Deepfakes Work

Deepfake technology is powered by machine learning, specifically Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which allow deep learning methods to analyze and learn the characteristics of a person's face and voice. It then superimposes these learned characteristics onto another individual in videos or audio recordings, creating a realistic, but entirely fabricated representation.

At a high level, GANs consist of two neural networks:

  • Generator: Creates synthetic data (e.g., a fake video).
  • Discriminator: Evaluates the authenticity of the generated content. These networks train against each other until the generator produces content that is indistinguishable from reality.

Techniques used include:

  • Face-swapping: Replacing one person's face with another in video footage.
  • Lip-syncing: Synchronizing mouth movements to fake speech.
  • Voice cloning: Reconstructing someone's voice using a short audio sample.

The Threat Landscape

Deepfakes are now a key tool in a bad actor's arsenal for committing fraud and spreading misinformation. Here are a few of the ways cybercriminals are using deepfakes to cause harm to organizations.

  • Political and Stock Manipulation: Deepfakes spread false information or fabricate events, influencing public opinion and investor behavior.

Brand and Reputation

  • Brand Sabotage: Deepfakes of executives making offensive or controversial remarks.
  • Customer Trust Erosion: As deepfakes increase, skepticism toward real content grows, undermining legitimate communications.

Regulatory and Legal Risks

  • Fake Government Issued IDs: Creation of genuine-looking driver's licenses, passports, mortgages, etc., for fraudulent use, such as bypassing Know Your Customer (KYC) checks.
  • Litigation Risk: Victims of deepfake harm may pursue legal action, exposing companies to lawsuits and liability.

Beneficial Use Cases

Despite their reputation for being misused, deepfakes also have practical, beneficial applications, ranging from entertainment to accessibility. Here are some examples:

  • Film and Entertainment: De-aging actors or resurrecting deceased performers.
  • Education: Creating realistic historical reenactments or translating content across multiple languages.
  • Accessibility: Enhancing speech for individuals with disabilities via synthetic voice tools.

Defense Strategies: What Leaders Must Do

Organizations will need to implement more robust IT security systems and processes to detect and respond to deepfake threats. This will include a combination of enhanced governance, technology-aided detection, and internal training and awareness programs. For example, governance would include developing an AI policy while technology-aided detection might include adopting advanced AI systems to help prevent fraud and identity theft by analyzing behavioral patterns, voice intonations, or visual inconsistencies in video or audio.

However, organizations must adopt a proactive stance—anticipating and mitigating risks—rather than responding only after an attack occurs.

The rapid evolution and proliferation of deepfake technology underscores the urgent need for advanced detection tools and updated regulatory frameworks. Striking a balance between enabling innovation and safeguarding against harmful misuse will be important, requiring a collaborative effort from technology professionals, lawmakers, and the public.
