Herrick Partner, Richard Linderman, Answers A Question From An AssociationHelpNow Reader

If our condo wants to provide a directory of everyone’s names and phone numbers, do they have to get approval from all residents?
United States

Question: If our condo wants to provide a directory of everyone's names and phone numbers, do they have to get approval from all residents?

Mr. Linderman's Answer: All unit owners within a condominium or homeowners association have the statutory legal right to obtain the name and mailing address of all other unit owners. However, providing a directory goes beyond the scope of the governing statutes and also publishes information (telephone numbers) that unit owners are not legally entitled to receive. In addition, there is the very good possibility that non-owners, such as renters or local vendors, may get a copy of that directory. Therefore, if your association wishes to publish a directory, then it should be sure to get the written consent of each resident that wishes to have his/her name listed before adding that information to the directory.
