The 4th English-Cypriot Law Conference took place in Limassol on 13 September 2019. Hundreds of legal professionals from both Britain and Cyprus were attracted to this high-profile event which was jointly organized by the Bar Council of England and Wales and the Cyprus Bar Association.

Nicolas Tsardellis, a partner of our firm, was one of the events key speakers on a panel discussing international sanctions. Developments in recent years in the field of international sanctions are of paramount importance to the legal industry as their application introduces new challenges into the routine work of all legal professionals. Central to the discussion were the EU and US sanction regimes and especially those sanctions imposed on Russia. Particular emphasis was placed on the extraterritorial application of US sanctions and recent notable events including the arrest of the CFO of Huawei in Canada and the detention of an Iranian tanker in Gibraltar.

Other important topics discussed included The Special Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List (SDN) published by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), the EU Blocking regulation, and the situation in UK post Brexit.
