Morrison & Foerster held a successful workshop titled "An Anatomy of CFIUS and U.S. Export Control Reforms for Chinese Life Sciences Companies" at the Shanghai office on May 10.

Joe Benkert, Senior Advisor in MoFo's National Security group, who previously served as a leading civilian official in the Department of Defense (DoD) and oversaw more than 400 CFIUS cases while at the DoD, shared his views on CFIUS reform from the perspective of the U.S. government. Chuan Sun, partner in MoFo's Shanghai and Hong Kong offices, co-hosted the workshop.

The two speakers gave a thorough analysis of various hot topics, including the new regulations that come with CFIUS reform and their impact on foreign investment; LPs investing in the U.S. through a fund; the definition of emerging and foundational technology under new export control policies; and 27 pilot program industries. They also answered questions from attendees concerning investment and licensing in real-life situations.

We were privileged to have 30 senior industry representatives from leading life sciences companies, funds, and investment banks as attendees. Lasting for two hours, the workshop ended with a lively Q&A discussion.
