Toronto (May 9, 2019) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) proudly announces that Peter Pamel, partner in its Shipping Law Group, has been appointed a Judge of the Federal Court and a Judge ex officio of the Federal Court of Appeal. His appointment was announced by the Honourable David Lametti, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Mr. Pamel graduated from McGill University in 1987 with degrees in both civil and common law, after first obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from Concordia University. He was called to the Québec Bar in 1988 and joined McMaster Meighen, a predecessor firm of BLG, where he practised in the area of maritime law for over 30 years.

Mr. Pamel has advised numerous Canadian and international stakeholders in the marine industry in such areas as casualty and environmental response, marine operations, regulatory compliance, vessel purchase and finance, contractual disputes and statutory prosecutions. He also acted as counsel in several landmark decisions of the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada in the area of maritime law.

Mr. Pamel is a founding member of BLG's Team North® and past chair of the Arctic Issues Committee of the Canadian Maritime Law Association. Over the years, his practice area increasingly included arctic navigation. With such an in-depth expertise, he has been a regular speaker at arctic shipping conferences around the world and has participated in numerous articles in the areas of maritime law and arctic navigation.

Mr. Pamel has actively been involved in his community, including as past director of the Royal Victoria Hospital Foundation and the McGill University Health Centre Foundation.
