MVA Director of Economic Development Daniel Young shares the remarkable story behind one of South Carolina’s most consequential aerospace investments in a new article published by Area Development.

In “Twenty-Four Hours to Save Boeing,” Young reflects on his experience with the South Carolina Department of Commerce during the early stages of Project Olympus, Boeing’s search for a final assembly site for the 787 Dreamliner. From a tropical storm and a former phosphate mine to a pivotal late-night decision, the site selection process was anything but straightforward.

Although South Carolina did not secure Boeing’s initial 787 assembly decision, the relationships and groundwork established through the process helped lay the foundation for Boeing’s eventual aerospace manufacturing campus in Charleston, which today employs roughly 8,000 South Carolinians.
