China

In a recent reflection post following the 2026 China Pharmaceutical Innovation Conference (CPIC), Morgan Xu, highlighted several key themes shaping the future of China's biotechnology industry. Xu pointed to the country's deepening innovation ecosystem, emphasizing the growing maturity of Chinese biotech companies, the strength of its CRDMO/CDMO infrastructure, and the increasing global competitiveness of China-developed assets.

He noted that China biotech is reaching an important inflection point, with scientific innovation, industry talent, and pharmaceutical infrastructure continuing to advance rapidly. At the same time, Xu identified regulatory and financing challenges that could influence the sector's next phase of growth, including evolving policies surrounding investigator-initiated trials (IITs), cross-border investment regulations, and overseas company formation and financing structures.

According to Xu, the industry's long-term success will depend on how effectively capital markets, regulatory frameworks, and global partnership models evolve alongside the growing supply of innovative therapies emerging from China. He also observed increasing international engagement at CPIC, reflecting the expanding global interest in China's biotechnology sector and its role in future drug development and dealmaking.
