In this video, Scott Hay-Bartlem looks back on our most popular It Depends topics over the years:

  1. Which is better for my super? A reversionary pension or a binding death benefit nomination?
  2. When is a negative gearing trust structure appropriate?
  3. Is there duty payable on a transfer of shares in a private company?
  4. When can I get a copy of someone's enduring power of attorney?
  5. Can a company own shares in itself?

Thank you all for watching and here's to the next 200!

Video Transcript

Well, welcome to this very special 200th edition of It Depends. It's hard to believe it's like four and a half years since we started the It Depends series. Our vision was to have a series of short, sharp videos on things we often get asked questions about, to help you guys understand what's going on. So, thank you for your support. Thank you for your ideas. Thank you for your feedback.

We thought for this one we'd look back on our most popular It depends from the last four and a half years. So, here we go.

So, coming in at number five, we have me doing 'can a company own shares in itself?' and I thought this was a really important one. We get this question so often and there's some real traps in it.

So, now at number four we have Sarah Camm talking about 'when can I get a copy of someone's enduring power of attorney?' Again, another question we get people asking us all the time. And very important to know what you can and can't do.

At number three, we have Sacha Robinson talking about 'Is there duty payable if I transfer shares in a private company?' and I can't tell you how often people ring or email thinking it's a very simple yes or no answer. But as we know, the question has to be it depends.

At number two we've got Steven Cawood asking, 'when is a negative gearing trust appropriate?'. Our negative gearing trusts have lots of special rules. They're great in some circumstances and not in others. Have a look at his video. It's a great one about negative gearing trusts.

And at number one, I answer the question I probably get asked the most. Which is better for my death benefit in super, a binding death benefit nomination or reversionary pension. I have to say, if there's ever a question that deserves an it depends answer, that's it.

Well, I hope you've enjoyed this look back for our top five It depends. Thank you all again for your feedback and for your involvement, for understanding what we're trying to do and getting on board. Always love to have your ideas about topics you'd like us to cover.

Thanks for watching this and the other 199 editions of It Depends.
