At the 9th Extraordinary Meeting of COMESA Trade Ministers on 2 April 2026, Tunisia’s Minister of Trade and Export Development, Samir Abid, called for the accelerated signing and ratification of the OAPI agreement, proposing that OAPI’s headquarters be established in Tunisia.

Discussions focused on adopting the COMESA Strategic Plan for 2026–2030 and the AfCFTA Implementation Strategy, which was described as key to deeper market integration, enhanced competitiveness and increased intra African trade.

Priority areas included stronger monitoring mechanisms, improved coordination between customs, trade and transport authorities, greater private sector engagement, and targeted national implementation plans supporting value chains, technology adoption and green economy initiatives.
