This is contribution number 16 by KPMG Meijburg & Co regarding the application procedure for residence permits in the Netherlands.
General procedure:
Individuals can apply for a Dutch residence permit at the Registration Office for Foreign Nationals. At the time of registration all relevant information is recorded including the purpose of residence. Once the application dues have been paid the applicant will be invited to complete the final application forms. On this occasion details and documents with respect to income and housing will be discussed.
Authorization for temporary residence:
For applicants who are not from Western Europe or the United States, the residence permit can only be granted if the individual can present a so-called authorization for temporary residence. As of April 1, 1994 applications for a residence permit will be discarded immediately if an individual has come to the Netherlands without an authorization for temporary residence. This means one can no longer come to the Netherlands on a tourist or visitor's visa and subsequently arrange a prolonged residence in the Netherlands over and above the expiration date on his visa.
This message is most likely to be relevant for individuals who require a residence permit in the Netherlands.
