The Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) held its 2015 accountants graduation ceremony on October 15th, bringing together 115 ACCA and 96 University of Malta graduates. The Republic of Malta's President Emeritus, Dr George Abela, was the guest of honour for the evening with some 700 people attending this event, and a reception being held soon after.

MIA Graduates

"With over 2,500 members and counting, MIA (or the 'Institute' as it often referred to) is one of the fastest growing professional bodies in Malta; since 1995 its graduates have increased by 500% and membership has risen by over 400%", said the Institute's newly appointed President, Mr Franco Azzopardi, during his opening speech.

In his keynote address, President Emeritus Dr George Abela emphasised the importance of sound ethics in the accountancy profession, highlighting the need to measure success not only in terms of GDP, but also the accountant's ethical conduct. 'Accountants must be weary of falling into the trap of placing money ahead of one's values and ethics', stressed Dr Abela.

A number of prestigious awards were presented during the event to students who excelled in their individual examinations or throughout their overall studies. From these we see two graduates in particular who stand out for their achievements; Mr. Andrew Tabone's work saw him place 1st locally and 3rd worldwide in Performance Management, while Mr. Steve Bilocca, who has now completed all examinations in his course, ranked 1st among local students and 39th globally for his overall cumulative score across his entire examination history.

The following is the full list of MIA's top performing students:

Educating members and future accountants is central to MIA's objectives. More than 60% of students whose performance landed them a global ranking had carried out their studies through the Institute's Professional Academy that true to its mission, encourages its students to aim higher. AIM Professional Academy is a Premier Member of the BPP Global Network (Europe's leader in professional training).

"We are proud of the results obtained and of the quality of the available courses on the island; our country is endowed with a huge human potential and this keeps making us proud both locally & overseas, year after year. As our nation's economy flexes its muscles further, the role of Accountants is pivotal for our continued economic growth and competitiveness," continued Mr. Azzopardi. "Where would Malta be today without the crucial role the accountancy profession has played in the country's economic success?"
