I read an article from BBC News about a project Dr. Teri Dankovich (Carnegie Mellon) is leading to provide low cost water treatment for places without a clean water supply. The approach is as interesting as it is effective. Below is a video about her book of filter paper with instructions for use written on the pages in food grade ink!

Dr. Dankovich presented her research yesterday at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. As shown in the video, the filter pages are impregnated with silver nanoparticles. When dirty water is filtered through the paper, the silver nanoparticles kill the bacteria. The reduction in bacterial load is above 99.9%. Just as important, the cost of producing the paper is minimal.

Check out Dr. Dankovich’s pAge Project, which is a collaboration with WaterIsLife.

So what IP does Dr. Dankovich have?

  1. Potential patentability of paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles.
  2. Potential patentability of formation of silver nanoparticles.
  3. Potential patentability of method for filtering water using paper impregnated with silver nanoparticles.
  4. Copyright in the text on the pages.
  5. Trademark in THE DRINKABLE BOOK.
  6. Trademark in PAGE DRINKING PAPER.
  7. Copyright in the video above and in her published papers.

You can donate at her website. Have you considered what IP you have in your company?
