We previously posted about Newark, New Jersey's paid sick leave ordinance, which the City Council passed on January 28, 2014. On January 29, 2014, Newark Mayor Luis A. Quintana signed the ordinance into law. This law takes effect on May 29, 2014.

As a reminder, this ordinance will apply to employees who have worked for 80 hours in a calendar year in the City of Newark, regardless of whether or not the employer maintains a location within the City. Under the new ordinance, employees will accrue 1 hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked. This will apply to any size employer (with the amount of leave required depending on the size of the employer). Large employers need to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year. Small employers (fewer than ten employees) only need to allow employees up to 24 hours of paid sick leave in any calendar year, except for child care workers, home health care workers, and food service workers, all of who can take up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year. Our previous blog post provides more details on this new law.
