European Union Energy and Natural Resources

The European Commission has published a report on the progress of renewable energy in the European Union. The report shows that renewables have grown fastest in the electricity sector, and slowest in the transport sector. The Commission is, overall, satisfied with the progress. Europe achieved a share of 16% renewables in 2014 and is likely to reach its goal of 20% renewables in 2020. The Commission has emphasised that the "trajectory becomes steeper", meaning member states will have to continue their efforts in order to reach the binding targets for 2020. This especially applies to France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, which will have to substantially increase their shares in renewables to stay on track. For some member states, such as Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the UK, the European Commission suggests reinforcing cooperation with other member states to reach their national binding targets in good time.
