The COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the number of individuals who applied for unemployment.
United States

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly increased the number of individuals who applied for unemployment. Because of the federal benefits provided to states during the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of individuals who have committed unemployment (UI) fraud for financial gain. As of February 2021, the SC Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) submitted a total of 2,855 unemployment insurance claims to state or federal authorities for investigation and prosecution for UI fraud. Join Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd's Demetrius Pyburn on June 24, from 12-1 PM where he will discuss the employer's role in stopping UI fraud, reporting tips and other COVID-19 unemployment updates.
