New York, NY—April 23, 2002—The International Trademark Association (INTA) is organizing a special session on geographical indications for the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) Doha Symposium on May 1 in Geneva, Switzerland.
The session will cover two main issues—the establishment of a multilateral register for geographical indications, and the expansion of the current Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) protection for geographical indications for wine and spirits to other products. The Symposium’s INTA panel participants will share their expertise on these issues, addressing the underlying question of the resolution of conflicts between geographical indications and trademarks under the TRIPS Agreement.
Representatives from the European Commission and the U.S. government will develop the EU and U.S. positions on both issues. INTA representatives Miguel Torres SA of Spain, the Danish Dairy Association, and the French Confederation of Goat Milk Producers and Industrials of Roquefort will express the industry’s point of view.
Simultaneous interpretation in French, English and Spanish will be available.
Questions about the Symposium should be directed to Bruce MacPherson, INTA director of external relations, at +1 212-768-9887, ext. 120.
