Foley Hoag Senior Counsel Gregory Craig has been selected to receive The National Law Journal’s Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who have made a lasting impact on the legal community throughout their careers.
Throughout his career, Craig has been at the forefront of numerous matters of national importance. He served as President Barack Obama’s first White House Counsel, Director of Policy and Planning to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Senior Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy. He also quarterbacked President Clinton’s impeachment defense in the House and served as lead counsel on the President’s trial team in the Senate.
In private practice, Craig helped lead the team that defended John Hinckley, who, in one of the most consequential trials in American history, was charged with the attempted assassination of President Reagan and found not guilty by reason of insanity. He also represented UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who was the target of an investigation into the Oil-for-Food scandal; four-star Marine Corps General and former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff James “Hoss” Cartwright; and businessman Robert Smith.
Craig also represented Elian Gonzalez’s father in his successful effort to reunite his family in Cuba and professional golfer Phil Mickelson in an SEC insider trader investigation. During his life as a lawyer, Craig has also represented CIA director Richard Helms, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Governor Don Siegelman and Senator Richard Shelby.
At Foley Hoag, Craig continues to advise clients on issues of national significance. His recent work includes representing the National Trust for Historic Preservation in its lawsuit challenging the construction of a ballroom on the White House grounds, as well as representing a coalition of cultural heritage and architecture organizations seeking federal review of proposed changes to the Kennedy Center.
His work has left a lasting mark on the legal profession, demonstrating the important role lawyers can play in public life.
