Asian Legal Business acknowledges Latham’s Corporate Team in Asia for ‘team excellence’

Singapore, 22 March 2005 … At the inaugural Asian Legal Business Southeast Asia "Deals of the Year" Awards, Latham & Watkins LLP1 scooped three awards:

  • Singapore Deal of the Year for the StarHub IPO
  • Southeast Asia Structured Finance & Securitization Deal of the Year for the MGTI High Yield Bond
  • Domestic Equity Deal of the Year for the StarHub IPO

The Deal of the Year award recognized the S$482 Starhub IPO as the leading transaction of 2004 in Singapore and/or involving a Singapore-based party, on the grounds of its value, complexity, the number of parties involved and the deal's significance to the market. The same deal also garnered the award for Domestic Equity Deal of the Year.

Latham & Watkins’ work on the MGTI High Yield Bond won the firm the Southeast Asia Structured Finance & Securitization Deal of the Year, selected by the judges for its innovation, structure and complexity.

"We are delighted with these three awards," said Mark Nelson, Office Managing Partner of Latham & Watkins in Singapore and lead on the MGTI transaction. "Singapore is the key center for our corporate finance ambitions in South and Southeast Asia and this recognition from the profession and from clients is testament to our progress. These deals helped define the Asian markets in 2004 and we are proud to have been involved."

Michael Sturrock, partner in the Latham & Watkins Singapore team and lead on the Starhub IPO , added: "These two deals singled out by the judges are among the most significant seen last year in Asia. The Starhub IPO of 481.8 million shares was one of the largest Singapore IPOs of the year. This was a tremendous team effort and one that stands out for is sheer scale and complexity, involving four major international telecommunications and media shareholders."
