Schnader is pleased to announce that partner Nancy Winkelman took office as President of The American Academy of Appellate Lawyers on January 1, 2016. When Nancy was selected as an Academy Fellow in 2004, she was the ninth lawyer and first woman selected from the Third Circuit.
Founded in 1990, the Academy consists of approximately 300 experienced appellate lawyers, former judges, and academicians across the nation. Central to the Academy's mission is advancing the administration of justice and promoting the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and advocacy in appellate courts. Membership in the Academy is by nomination only, involves an extensive vetting process among appellate practitioners and judges, and is reserved for those experienced appellate advocates who have demonstrated the highest level of skill.
Nancy has extensive experience handling federal and state appeals, with a practice covering a wide range of substantive areas and a diverse spectrum of clients. She also has an active pro bono practice, including having handled a case in the United States Supreme Court. She has lectured widely on appellate practice, and taught Appellate Advocacy at the University of Pennsylvania Law School for ten years. Nancy has been recognized annually in The Best Lawyers in America in appellate law since 2006, and as one of Benchmark Litigation's nationwide "Top 250 Women in Litigation," one of only nine women in Pennsylvania selected for this honor.
Nancy serves as appellate counsel at all stages of litigation—from pre-trial through the appeals process, and regularly draws upon her significant experience to provide appellate consulting. She joined Schnader over 25 years ago because of the excellence of its appellate practice and has played a significant role in promoting that excellence through the years, having served as both the long-term Co-Chair of the Firm's Appellate Practice Group and as Co-Chair of the Firm's Litigation Department.
