Guernsey Finance's on-island members can learn the benefits of doing business in China from two experts on the region at the promotional agency's China update on Thursday 6 September.

HSBC London-based Director of China and RMB Internationalisation Sue Anne Tay, who is part of the company's global strategy function which drives China-related initiatives and China outbound business, has been confirmed as one of the guest speakers at the event, which will take place at The Old Government House Hotel.

Her presentation will cover trends and drivers shaping China's outbound direct investment, introduce the objectives and progress of Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the cost and drivers of BRI and how corporates, services and financial institutions capitalise on the BRI.

Also speaking is Charles Scott, Managing Director of Guernsey-based insurance manager Alternative Risk Management (ARM) Managing Director, which has had plenty of recent success in China. In late 2017, ARM was involved in the first Chinese commercial reinsurance company set up in Guernsey, Brilliant Reinsurance (Guernsey) Limited – which it now manages – and also confirmed a joint venture with Beijing Airport Captive Management Consulting to enable to pair to work alongside each other in the creation of captive structures and the provision of captive management services for Chinese business.

Guernsey Finance Deputy Chief Executive Kate Clouston, who has visited both China and Asia Pacific many times to build ties alongside GF Representatives Wendy Weng (China) and Dorothy Kwok (Asia Pacific), is confident that hearing straight from those who have experienced success in the regions will inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

"We regularly encourage Guernsey businesses to travel to China and Asia Pacific to see what opportunities there are to develop business and hearing about that success first hand is the best way for practitioners to become inspired to seek opportunities themselves," she said. "There is plenty of success to be had out there for Guernsey companies – and we invite them to take that first leap out there and see what it's about."

GF will provide a market update, with Wendy and Dorothy also discussing their latest activities and achievements in their respective regions.

Wendy will focus on how Guernsey industry can work with Chinese companies and what Chinese clients require from Guernsey, as well as outlining plans for next year.

Dorothy will provide an update on market trends in Hong Kong, including keeping a Significant Controllers Register, regulation of trust or company service providers in Hong Kong, the health of Hong Kong's asset and wealth management business and green finance.

"Wendy and Dorothy have both put in significant groundwork and are both looking forward to updating our members on their activities in person," Miss Clouston added.

Eighty-eight members have already registered so places are filling up fast. On-island members can register for the China update at our event website. HSBC is Gold Sponsor for the event.

If you wish to meet with Dorothy or Wendy while they are in the island from 3-11 September, please email Kate.
