The Ontario Ministry of Labour (“MOL”) focuses its regulatory attention on specific topics where it sees a more urgent need. Its 2013 current spring and summer “blitz” addresses the needs of vulnerable workers. Vulnerable workers typically include those who are young or new to the labour market.

The spring and summer blitz addresses occupational health and safety (“OHS”) compliance as well as Employment Standards Act (“ESA”) compliance for people in these sectors:

  • Industrial establishments

  • Health care

  • Salons, spas, nail salons

  • Manufacturing and distribution

  • Fast food, restaurants

  • Construction sites

  • Farming

  • Recreation: gyms, pools, bowling alleys

  • Recreation centres

Employers of any size, operating in these sectors, can expect a higher level of uninvited, random scrutiny by inspectors from the Ministry of Labour. This year’s full blitz schedule has been published by the MOL. By advertising its intentions the Ministry hopes to inspire employers to check on applicable standards, measure current compliance and move swiftly to take corrective action.
