The ACLU of Colorado named Arnold & Porter as one of the recipients of the 2022 Edward Sherman Award. This award is not given annually, but rather when a firm or attorney performs "outstanding legal work on behalf of furthering civil liberties in Colorado."
The award, which recognizes "those who demonstrate the spirit and heart in their gifts of time and talent to the work of the ACLU of Colorado," was given to Arnold & Porter for its successful representation of seven protestors who sued the City of Denver after officers used excessive force against peaceful protestors in demonstrations in the summer of 2020 in the wake of George Floyd's murder. The jury found the city and police committed a variety of constitutional violations and awarded a total of $14 million to the 12 plaintiffs who went to trial.
Arnold & Porter attorneys who were recognized included partners Timothy Macdonald, head of the firm's Denver office, Matthew Douglas, and senior counsel Ed Aro. The team also included partners Reeves Anderson Diana Sterk, and Colin O'Brien; senior associates Patrick Reidy, Mike Sebba, Jessica Laguerre, and Leslie Bailey; associates Brian Williams, Mindy Gorin, Andreas Moffett, Holly Boux, Christine Lao-Scott, and Laurel Ruza, and legal assistants Tanya Huffaker, Noemi Sanchez, and Kevin Willett. Partner Elizabeth Wang of Loevy and Loevy was also recognized for her work on this matter.
The award was presented during the ACLU of Colorado's Towards Liberty: Celebrating 70 Years of Action.
