Soil Framework Directive Withdrawn

The Soil Framework Directive was intended to create a legal framework for the protection and sustainable management of soil resources.

The European Commission has formally withdrawn the proposed Soil Framework Directive. The Directive, which would have amended Directive 2004/35/EC, was intended to create a legal framework for the protection and sustainable management of soil resources. However, the European Commissioner for the Environment emphasised in a speech in Brussels on 19 June 2014 that the Commission remains committed to the objective of soil protection and will examine options on how to best achieve this.
