The Governor of Bermuda announced today the appointment of a Privacy Commissioner to be effective 20 January 2020.

Alexander White, a lawyer from the United States will have the mandate to provide information and education to both organisations and the public before the Personal Information and Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) becomes fully operative. PIPA outlines the requirements for organisations that use personal information, as well as the rights that individuals have regarding the use of their personal information by organisations. PIPA is based on international standards of good business practice for the use of personal information.

Organisations must now prepare for compliance with PIPA by understanding exactly what personal information they use, where that data is held, the purposes for which that data is used and where that data is transferred to and from.
