Wiley has secured asylum in the United States for an Afghan refugee family who fled their home country following the collapse of the government and the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. The family endured escalating religious and gender-based persecution and discrimination and could not access critical medical care for their child, who has significant ongoing health needs.
After arriving in the United States and receiving humanitarian parole in early 2024, Wiley undertook representation of the family. The team guided the family through the asylum application process and, following an extensive merits hearing, convinced the U.S. Immigration Court in Maryland to grant the family asylum. Following the court’s ruling, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security waived its right to appeal, ensuring the family's permanent protection and stability in the United States.
The Wiley team representing the family pro bono included Pro Bono Partner Theodore A. Howard, Insurance partner Jason P. Cronic, and Telecom, Media & Technology associate Jackson McNeal, and was assisted by paralegal Kristine Lynch.
