Dallas — The law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP is pleased to announce that Emily A. Parker is rejoining the firm as a partner in its tax practice group and as a member of the firm’s management committee, effective Aug. 1, 2004. Parker will be in the firm’s Dallas office. She left the firm in 2002 to serve as Deputy Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service. On Aug. 1, 2003, she became Acting Chief Counsel and left the IRS in May 2004.
"We are truly honored Emily has decided to rejoin Thompson & Knight," said Pete Riley, the firm’s managing partner. "Prior to her departure for the IRS, she was already regarded as one of the nation’s top tax litigators, having prevailed in the largest tax case ever tried in the tax court. She brings the firm more than 30 years in active tax practice and the experience of having managed the IRS Office of Chief Counsel."
Parker said that she considered other options, including remaining in Washington, D.C. "The future is bright both in Dallas and at Thompson & Knight so the decision to return home was easy," she said. "I am proud of my government service. I believe I made a difference and improved tax administration, including efforts combating abusive tax shelters, and am better prepared to represent taxpayers before the IRS."
Parker received a J.D., with honors, from Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 1973 and a B.A., with highest honors, from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970.
