At a time where management/licensing of rights and copyright commercialization is dramatically transformed by the development of digital marketplaces and disruptive technologies, the European Commission and the National Copyright Administration of China (CNAC), with the technical support of IP Key China, partnered in the organization of a roundtable for China's copyright public and private sectors.

The roundtable on December 13th focused on technical exchanges in the form of expert roundtables, with contributions from EU and Chinese copyright experts.

IP Key China is directed by the European Commission and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). IP Key China is designed to enhance EU-China cooperation in areas of priority with a special focus on a market access related issue.

Wang Zhicheng, Director General of the Copyright department of CNAN opened the roundtable. Gyta Berasneviciute-Singh, Project Leader of IP Key China, underlined the evolving challenges to copyright protection in the digital era and emphasized the importance of continued EU-China cooperation.

Over 80 participants from the EU, NCAC, academic institutions, and rightholders attended this closed-door meeting to exchange insights and strengthen international IP collaboration.

Online Copyright Infringement and Platform Liability

Reinout van Malenstein, partner at HFG, presented within the topic of Copyright and Online Platforms, on Online Copyright Infringement and Platform Liability in China.

Mr. Zhang Xiaoyue, Senior Anti-piracy officer, IFPI Greater China Office, who spoke on Content Protection in China.

Eleonora Rosati from Stockholm University, who spoke on Liability of internet platforms under EU IP law: Between case law and legislative action.

Li Zizhu, Researcher, Intellectual Property Research Center of China University of Political Science and Law, who spoke on Responsibilities and Obligations of Online Platforms with Business in New Areas and Forms.

Wang Ruiting, Vice President of Public affairs at Yuewen, who spoke on Opportunities and Challenges of Content Service Platforms in the Digital Era.

International Emerging Issues on Copyright Practice

Furthermore, Reinout van Malenstein moderated the session on International Emerging Issues on Copyright Practice, with the following speakers and presentations:

Liu Ping, Vice President & Director General of the Music Copyright Society, who presented on Copyright Protection of Musical Works in Digital Environment in China.

Benjamin NG, CISAC Regional Director for Asia-Pacific who presented on Law and Practice about the Protection of Musical Works in Audiovisual Content.

Mihaly FICSOR, Hungarian Copyright Council, who presented on The Application of the Right of Making Available to the Public, with special attention to the Question of Online Exhaustion. He also presented on Structural Issues of Collective Management of Copyright and related Rights.

Zhang Hongbo, Standing Vice President & Director General (Legal Representative), China Written Works Copyright Society (CWWCS), who spoke on Copyright Protection of Written Works in Digital Environment in China.

The event was closed by speeches of Dr. Roberto Escarre, activity coordinator of IP key and by Wang Zhicheng, Director General, Copyright Department, NCAC.
