Chrysler Supply Pact Creates 200-300 Jobs

"The availability of well-trained workers - and its proximity to Chrysler's Graz plant - were decisive factors in locating Magna's production facility in Styria," explains Walter Lunzer of Magna's Europe headquarters.

The Canadian automotive supplier - with three existing facilities in Styria - will produce stamped components for Chrysler-Eurostar's Jeep and Eagle at the new site. The ATS 700 mil. ($58.3 million) investment will create 200-300 new jobs by 1998.

Chrysler, which welcomed Magna's decision to locate in Styria, never considered seeking cheaper Eastern European suppliers for its annual production of 100,000 vehicles. Rather, more than 40 Austrian firms supply components to the Graz facility. Says purchasing manager Steven Alcock: "That guarantees first-class product quality."
