This week, the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") announced that it will reimburse states, tribes and local governments approximately $1 million for their costs in responding to the Gold King Mine spill that occurred in southwestern Colorado on August 5, 2015.
According to The Denver Post's article today, "the EPA is also considering whether to designate the area around the Gold King Mine as a Superfund site, which would free up millions of dollars in federal aid for a broad cleanup."
In addition, earlier this week, The Denver Post reported that Animas River headwaters contamination exceeds state standards for cadmium, copper, lead and other toxic acid metals draining from inactive mines.
As we said when this wastewater release occurred, the cleanup has a long way to go.
