Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer has advised Gatwick Airport (the Airport) in relation to their successful obtainment of development consent from the Secretary of State for Transport for their Northern Runway Project (the Project) to expand the Airport.
The Project involves the repositioning of the existing northern runway 12 metres to the north to allow dual runway operations with the main runway which, together with significant other airfield infrastructure works, terminal extensions and highway improvements, will help unlock significant growth at the Airport. The £2.2 billion scheme will be privately financed and is forecast to create circa 14,000 jobs in the South-East and inject £1 billion into the region's economy every year.
The Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer team was led by senior associate Ian Mack, with support from a number of other members of the Planning Team, principally senior associates Natasha Hyde, Julia McKeown and Ruth Taylor, and associates Leon Culot and Elizabeth Tones. Additional Core Real Estate support was provided in relation to the associated land acquisition for the Project, led by partner Julian Pollock with support from senior associates Adam Hooton and Anne Griffith.
Senior associate Ian Mack commented: "We were delighted to assist Gatwick in securing the development consent order for the Northern Runway Project. Whilst a relatively simple project in its conception (repositioning the centreline of an existing runway), there were a number of complex challenges which had to be overcome in securing the permission. I'm very pleased that the collective hard work of the entire project team, expertly lead by Gatwick's brilliant in-house team, has delivered the consent and we look forward to working with the Airport during its implementation to deliver this vitally important project."
