Behind the taxi service's success, Uber Australia's share economy approach has raised a number of legal questions.
Australia Transport

Since launching in Sydney in 2012, Uber Australia has grown to more than one million customers, and is projected to have more than 20,000 local drivers by the end of the year. But behind the success, Uber's share economy approach is often at odds with regulations designed with more traditional business models in mind, and has raised a number of legal questions.

In this broadcast, Partner Justin Byrne, Special Counsel Brett Bolton, and Associate Adele Garnett explain the following legal issues surrounding Uber:

  • The new requirement that Uber drivers register for GST;
  • Key issues for Uber under Australian competition laws; and
  • Whether Uber drivers are likely to be independent contractors or employees and why the distinction matters.
