Recent studies have concluded that Christchurch continues to be an attractive and affordable place to live and work.

QV's House Price Index March 2023 data revealed that Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri properties continue to be, on average, cheaper to buy or rent than many other New Zealand towns and cities. For example, while the average house prices for Christchurch and Selwyn were $742,000 and $819,000 respectively, house-hunters in Wellington and Auckland could expect to pay an average of $842,000 to $1.2 million. Properties in the wider Christchurch area are more modern and warmer than in other areas, with 27% of houses in the area having been built in the last decade.

A 2022 study revealed that Christchurch also holds the highest scores amongst major NZ cities for its work-life balance, ease of getting around, lifestyle opportunities and safety. A recent survey of local businesses by the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce has also showed increasing confidence in the city's local economy, while the University of Canterbury's student numbers have also dramatically increased in another show of confidence.
