As the financial year end draws near, O'Sullivan Davies hopes this year has been productive.

June marks our Eliza Fitzgerald's second anniversary at O'Sullivan Davies. In May, Eliza was nominated for the Law Society's 2021 Lawyer of the Year Award recognising her pro bono assistance to clients though Law Access.

Professional Education Series

As part of our professional education series, 15 April saw us host Dawn Smith, CEO of OVIS and Kirra Grenfell, Community Team Leader of OVIS on the seminar topic, "Why doesn't she just leave?", focusing on family and domestic violence and abuse.

An excellent presentation explaining the services OVIS offers, its history and the valuable impact it can make in people's lives.

Changes

On 17 February 2021, Federal Parliament passed the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia Bill 2019. Western Australia has its own stand-alone court, the Family Court of Western Australia. Although the merger of the Family Court of Australia and Federal Circuit Court will not have a direct impact on Western Australians, a number of changes, and, in particular, delays, are anticipated.

On 2 June 2021, Family Court Amendment Bill 2021 was introduced to the Parliament of Western Australia. The Bill is aimed at ensuring that de facto partners who are have committed family violence cannot directly cross-examine their partner and reduces the risk of the Family Court being used as a tool of abuse.

Perth and Peel Regions are subject to a lockdown period from 12.01pm 29 June 2021 to 12.01pm Saturday 3 July 2021. Further directions were made under the Emergency management Act 2009: the Outbreak Restrictions (Circuit-Break Lockdown – Level 3) Directions. Click here to view the full version of the directions.

As always, we are pleased to be able to continue assisting our clients to resolve their family law disputes – if you know anyone who would benefit from a conversation with us, please do not hesitate to have them contact us for a confidential discussion.
