In June 2022, Blakes will launch the third edition of its Canadian Cybersecurity Trends Study. This study was pioneered by Blakes in 2020 in response to the lack of available materials analyzing cyber activity in the Canadian marketplace.
It is now well recognized that cybersecurity risk should not be treated as merely an IT issue — it should be viewed as enterprise risk and must be addressed across an organization.
The threats and responses in this rapidly changing environment require that companies maintain a high level of engagement. One of the dramatic shifts we have seen over the past few years is how companies are responding to ransomware attacks. Previously, operational incapacity was the driving force for ransom payments, but today, companies are increasingly compelled to pay a ransom because of fear their data will be released publicly. Additionally, as data breach notification laws and regulations strengthen, compliance costs of a thorough data analysis to understand what was taken and the resulting notification are also increasing. This is adding to the pressure of ransom payments due to data exfiltration.

Blakes will continue to provide you with a confirmation of participation for your records. As stipulated in the above-mentioned regulation, members must preserve supporting documents attesting their completion of training activities for a period of seven years beginning on April 30 following the end of the reference period during which such activities were completed.
