Event Description

In June 2022, Blakes will launch the third edition of its Canadian Cybersecurity Trends Study. This study was pioneered by Blakes in 2020 in response to the lack of available materials analyzing cyber activity in the Canadian marketplace.

It is now well recognized that cybersecurity risk should not be treated as merely an IT issue — it should be viewed as enterprise risk and must be addressed across an organization.

The threats and responses in this rapidly changing environment require that companies maintain a high level of engagement. One of the dramatic shifts we have seen over the past few years is how companies are responding to ransomware attacks. Previously, operational incapacity was the driving force for ransom payments, but today, companies are increasingly compelled to pay a ransom because of fear their data will be released publicly. Additionally, as data breach notification laws and regulations strengthen, compliance costs of a thorough data analysis to understand what was taken and the resulting notification are also increasing. This is adding to the pressure of ransom payments due to data exfiltration.

Please join members of our Cybersecurity group to learn about the changes we have identified over the past year, how upcoming changes to federal and provincial privacy laws may impact your company's cybersecurity plan, the diligence questions you must ask when negotiating any transaction and how to best mitigate the risks of a class action lawsuit.

Topics

  • Important trends and changes to cyber threats facing Canadian businesses
  • Key statistics drawn from the incidents we studied, including the types of incidents, outcomes, insurance coverage and other lessons learned
  • Analysis of data breaches reported under privacy legislation and what to expect from Canadian federal and provincial privacy law changes
  • Cybersecurity issues to be considered by both buyers and sellers
  • Trends in cybersecurity-related litigation
