The global firm Jones Day announces that Lanier Saperstein has joined the Firm's Financial Markets Practice as a partner in its New York Office.

Mr. Saperstein has wide-ranging experience in international banking, representing Chinese financial institutions and corporations in U.S. litigation and regulatory matters. He has been recognized as a leader in the field by The Washington Post and the National Law Journal. Among his high-profile matters, Mr. Saperstein successfully defended a global Chinese bank in a high-profile lawsuit alleging terrorist financing, obtained a precedent-setting decision in the U.S. for three large Chinese banks, halting an attempt to seize PRC assets in China, and was the first lawyer in the U.S. to require a litigant to use the Hague Evidence Convention when requesting confidential bank records from China.

"Lanier's extensive experience with international financial institutions makes him an excellent fit for the global concerns of our clients," said Jay Tambe, who heads Jones Day's Financial Markets Practice, the Firm's fully integrated group with more than 300 lawyers advising banks and other financial market participants on a full range of cross-border financial transactions, regulatory matters, investigations, and litigations. "Lanier is well-versed in the intricacies of banking, finance, and security issues. He will be making vital contributions as our Financial Markets Practice expands to better serve our bank clients, as well as direct-lenders and fintech companies. We enthusiastically welcome him to our New York Office."

"I am thrilled be joining Jones Day," said Mr. Saperstein. "It has a deep bench across multiple areas, including transactional, regulatory and complex litigation. It is an ideal platform to provide foreign banking clients with top-notch legal services in every legal area that is critical to them." Mr. Saperstein added, "I am also excited to be working closely with Jay and the other impressive lawyers here to plan and prepare for the next wave of legal issues that we anticipate will impact global banks."

In addition to his banking background, Mr. Saperstein works on commercial matters for foreign companies, including contract disputes, prosecuting and defending against claims of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty, post-closing adjustment disputes, and post-judgment and arbitral award enforcement actions.

"Lanier is a go-to source on a range of complicated issues and is especially deft at dealing with high-profile, high-risk matters for clients," said Lee DeJulius, Partner-in-Charge of the Firm's New York Office. "As the new decade begins and we grow our Financial Markets Practice, Lanier will be a strong addition to an already talented team. I welcome him to Jones Day."

Mr. Saperstein is also an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law, where he teaches a class on banking regulation and enforcement, and he is an active member of the New York City Bar Association's Compliance Committee, which addresses issues impacting foreign and domestic financial institutions. He writes and speaks frequently on financial and China-related matters. His bar and court admissions include: New York, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
