WASHINGTON – In testimony before the House Oversight Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties today, Yazmin Juárez described the medical neglect and inappropriate care that her baby daughter received while in US Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) custody, leading to her death just weeks later.

Yazmin's legal team at Arnold & Porter, who are handling this matter on a pro bono basis, are representing Yazmin in litigation against ICE and others responsible for Mariee's tragic and painful death, which occurred six weeks after ICE released Mariee and Yazmin from Dilley.

"A mother lost her little girl because ICE and those running the Dilley immigration prison failed them inexcusably," said R. Stanton Jones, Partner at Arnold & Porter. "Instead of offering safe harbor from the life-threatening violence they were fleeing, ICE detained Yazmin and her baby Mariee in a place with unsafe and unsanitary conditions, substandard and inadequate medical care. The living conditions in ICE detention were unsafe for any child, and the medical care Mariee received there was woefully inadequate, neglectful, and substandard. We are working with Yazmin and her family to obtain justice for the failures by ICE and others, and to ensure that no other family suffers such a needless and devastating loss."
