Chapman Tripp has advised on Downer EDI's (Downer) acquisition of Hawkins from the McConnell family, a deal which was announced to the ASX and NZX today.

Chapman Tripp partner John Strowger, assisted by senior associate Lauren Curtayne, advised the Hawkins Group and the McConnell family in the agreement of Downer's purchase of Hawkins' construction, infrastructure and project management businesses.

Downer EDI Limited is an Australasian provider of rail, mining, utilities and transport services and technology and communications' services and is dual-listed on the ASX and NZX. Hawkins is a New Zealand company that specialises in the design and construction delivery of buildings and infrastructure.

Strowger said the deal – to be completed on 31 March – would see the consolidation of two strong businesses.

"Hawkins has a number of large projects underway, including the SH16 Lincoln to Westgate upgrade, the construction of Auckland's Park Hyatt Hotel and the Pier B Extension at Auckland Airport, which complements the significant pipeline of projects under Downer's belt."
