Ward and Smith attorney Mike McIntyre has been reappointed to the Central Selection Committee of the Morehead-Cain Foundation, where he will help interview and select the next class of Morehead-Cain Scholars.

McIntyre, a Morehead Scholar, attended the University of North Carolina as an undergraduate from 1974 to 1978. After finishing law school at UNC, he served for 11 years on the Robeson County Morehead Scholarship Selection Committee, including nine years as chairman.

As a member of the Central Selection Committee, McIntyre will interview finalists for the foundation’s new Sophomore Selection Program. Under this program, new Morehead-Cain Scholars are chosen from among 32 finalists after a full day of interviews, with roughly half selected to join the scholarship program as they enter their sophomore year. The program was created to bring in students who demonstrated leadership, service, moral force of character, and physical vigor during their freshman year, along with strong academic and intellectual ability and visionary leadership that points to future impact at the university and in communities across the state, country, and world.

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship provides a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, along with summer enrichment programs held throughout the country and around the world. It is the oldest merit-based scholarship in the United States.

McIntyre served in the United States Congress for 18 years following his deep involvement in community, civic, and church activities in his hometown of Lumberton, where he practiced law. He is now an attorney with Ward and Smith in Raleigh, handling government and economic development issues on both the state and federal levels.
