Principal Brigide Mattar recently shared her thoughts on developing an effective strategy for patent protection in product design and engineering in an interview for PLAN magazine.

Brigide discusses a variety of themes including managing patent risks, confidentiality, reverse engineering, patents in the context of technical collaborations and developing and managing a strategic patent portfolio.

On reverse engineering, Brigide notes "reverse-engineering processes are becoming more and more sophisticated and work even when it comes to complex technologies." Once a product enters the public domain, the possibility for a third party to reverse engineer that product becomes a reality. Without effective IP/patent protection, little can usually be done to stop that third party from launching a similar competing product.
