MLT Aikins lawyers John Agioritis and Erica Klassen will be presenting at SustainTech" – the Saskatchewan Environmental Industry and Managers Association (SEIMA) annual conference. The conference takes place on March 20-21, 2024, at the Delta Saskatoon Downtown.

The conference focuses on the latest environmental practices and technologies to address sustainability issues over the life cycle of Saskatchewan's primary resource sectors – agriculture, energy and mining. This year, there will be four dedicated breakout sessions. MLT Aikins is sponsoring a breakout session on legal best practices for geoscientists and engineers.

John Agioritis will provide practical and legal guidance to employers for the hours, days, weeks and months following a serious workplace accident. He will cover employers' reporting obligations, dealing with regulatory authorities, statutory investigation requirements and key practices for maintaining legal privilege and control over the flow of information during an investigation. His presentation will also review Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) caselaw on due diligence and sentencing decisions, highlighting key principles and identifying practical takeaways for employers.

Erica Klassen will present an overview of the origin and development of the duty to consult and practical considerations for fulfilling the duty to consult in regulatory processes. She will discuss the legal framework for the duty to consult and potentially accommodate Indigenous peoples in the context of resource development, including the origin of the duty to consult in Canadian law and the basic underlying principles. In addition, her presentation will discuss the updated First Nation and Métis Consultation Policy Framework for Saskatchewan, which came into effect on January 1, 2024.
