Montréal (Canada) - Fasken announced today that Mr. David Lametti, former Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada, is joining the Firm as Counsel.

David served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2019 to 2023, and has served as Member of Parliament for LaSalle—Émard—Verdun since 2015. He announced, earlier today, that he will be stepping down, as a Parliamentarian over the course of the next few weeks.

"We are thrilled to have Mr. Lametti joining us," said Martin Denyes, Firm Managing Partner of Fasken. "When you speak with David, it does not take long to understand that he shares our values and our commitments. He has worked tirelessly toward indigenous reconciliation in Canada. He is also incredibly engaged and interested in emerging technology matters including the growing importance of artificial intelligence."

Among his accomplishments as a Parliamentarian was his leadership in Canada's adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He worked alongside Chief Perry Bellegarde, now a Special Advisor to Fasken, in achieving this important milestone on Canada's path to reconciliation.

"The Firm looks forward to Mr. Lametti and Chief Bellegarde working together, once again, in support of our clients and their objectives. David's experience and skills will undoubtedly prove valuable to enhance our clients' success, contributing to our group's continued growth and excellence," said Kevin O'Callaghan, Partner and Leader of the Firm's Indigenous Law group.

In addition, during his time as Parliamentary Secretary in Innovation, he helped to lay the groundwork for the new innovation economy: the IP Strategy, privacy law reform, the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the Supercluster Program, social innovation funding, and the Strategic Innovation Fund.

"I am absolutely thrilled to be joining Fasken at this juncture in my career. Fasken is a leader in the Indigenous reconciliation and digital tech/AI spaces; I hope to enhance this firm leadership with my own thinking and experience in these areas for the benefit of all Canadians. On a personal note, it is a unique opportunity for me to connect and re-connect with many brilliant former McGill students who I have taught, mentored and learned from over the past three decades," said David Lametti.

David will be based in Fasken's Montréal office.

"We are delighted to welcome Mr. Lametti to the Firm and we are pleased he will be based here in Montréal, where he has taught and mentored so many of our lawyers during his time as a professor at McGill. His extensive experience, wealth of knowledge and unique perspective from government makes him an invaluable asset to our team. We are confident that his support will strengthen our relationships with clients in Québec, across Canada and around the globe," said François Brais, Managing Partner for the Québec region.
