Prime Minister Joseph Muscat was recently in Hong Kong as a keynote speaker at the EU-Asia Relations Symposium in Financial Services which took place between the 27th and 29th of May. This presented a good opportunity for Malta to promote its financial services sector and strengthen relations with China in this regard.
The Prime Minister along with Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) Chairman Professor Joseph Bannister met with the Securities & Futures Commission, the financial services regulator of Hong Kong in order to explore prospects for collaboration between Malta and China on the regulatory level.
Professor Bannister highlighted the growth of the Maltese financial services sector and Malta's great potential in this sector was acknowledged by Ashley Alder, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong regulator.
On a broader scenario, Malta's ongoing efforts at strengthening relations with China and Asia are various. The Maltese government has recently completed a €2 million investment in a ShangHai property and Malta is also one of the founding members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, aimed at boosting Asian infrasturcture across numerous key sectors.
