A legal amendment now requires employers in Japan to use 'best efforts' to secure working opportunities for their employees up to the age of 70.

Japan is experiencing rapid changes, including an aging society, declining birthrate, and decreasingpopulation. In view of this, and in order to maintain an active social economy, Japan mustfacilitate an environment in which older people who wish to work can fully realise their potential.

The 'Act on the Stabilisation of Employment of Elderly Persons'has been amended toprovide various options for securing employment opportunities for individuals up to the age of 70. These amendments took effect on 1 April 2021.
