This morning, Albertans woke up to an assessment of the damage that has been inflicted on the city of Fort McMurray. The damage caused to this beautiful city is shocking. Thankfully, and somewhat miraculously, the positive is that no one was hurt. Let's hope the worst is over.

Most Canadians have not been to Fort McMurray and likely never will. Kim Moody of our firm grew up in Fort McMurray. His childhood home was in an area called Beacon Hill. Unfortunately, Beacon Hill is 80% destroyed. It is likely that his childhood home is now a pile of ashes. One close family friend of his has lost everything. They woke up this morning to find out that their home (that they have owned for 40+ years) and some of their children's homes have been destroyed. Other members of our firm have family members or friends that have also been affected.

No matter what your politics or beliefs are, Fort McMurray is one of the most important—if not THE most important—economic driver of the Alberta and Canadian economy. It is filled with down-to-earth, honest, hardworking people. Fort McMurray is the definition of Alberta. If you've met a Fort McMurray-ite, you've met a proud Albertan and Canadian.

While possessions can be destroyed, the spirit and drive of Albertans cannot. Possessions can be replaced. At this time of crisis, Albertans will do what we always do... pitch in and help out our fellow neighbors. As a small example, some of our Edmonton teammates are already publicly offering their homes as a refuge for displaced families.

In the days, weeks, and months ahead, the generosity and resilience of Albertans will once again be on display as an example of the spirit of all Canadians. In the meantime, please keep Fort McMurray-ites in your thoughts and prayers. Better yet, please do something tangible to help out your fellow Canadians.
